BS 7910 Annex Q — Welding Residual Stress Profile

Estimates the upper-bound through-thickness residual stress profile of as-welded (non-PWHT) arc-welded joints, per BS 7910:2019 Annex Q, for flat butt / pipe seam welds (Q.2) and pipe girth welds (Q.3). Pick the weld geometry, stress direction (transverse, perpendicular to the weld, or longitudinal, parallel to it), material (ferritic or austenitic), thickness and yield strength; the profile is then linearized over the full section into membrane, bending and self-balancing components for use in a fracture assessment.

The profile depends on the effective yield strength chosen per Q.1.5 — the larger of parent and weld yield for the longitudinal direction, the smaller for the transverse direction. For pipe girth welds in the transverse direction the heat-input ratio E_1/B bands the profile into low (\le 50), medium (\le 120) and high (> 120 J/mm²) cases. The profiles are upper-bound estimates and apply to flaws within the weld width of the centreline (Q.1.7).

v1 covers flat butt / pipe seam (Q.2) and pipe girth (Q.3) only — T-butt and repair welds are roadmap items. Axial seam welds via the Q.2 profile need r/B > 10, and the thickness, yield and heat-input ranges follow Tables Q.1 / Q.2. This tool outputs the profile and its membrane / bending / self-balancing decomposition only; combining them into the total residual SIF K_{rs} belongs to the fracture assessment calculator (via the Annex M magnifiers).
